Alan Hutchinson combines more than 25 years of professional home theater experience with formal film study, hands-on filmmaking, video editing and a lifelong passion for classic cinema.
Alan Hutchinson is the founder and owner of HTmarket.com, a home theater retailer established in 2000. For more than 25 years, he has helped customers plan and furnish dedicated home theaters, media rooms, screening rooms and residential entertainment spaces.
His professional experience includes home theater seating, viewing distances, room layouts, riser design, auditorium sightlines, projection, surround sound, acoustics, theater carpeting, stage drapery, lighting and theater décor. Alan is also the founder of HT Design, HTmarket's proprietary home theater seating brand.
Alan's 1996 screening room featured a Barco CRT projector, a Da-Lite projection screen, external video-processing equipment and a 5.1-channel Atlantic Technology surround-sound system. Atlantic Technology was one of the early pioneers in purpose-built home theater surround-sound systems.
Building a serious home cinema during that period required considerably more technical involvement than most modern installations. CRT projectors required careful positioning, lens alignment, convergence, calibration and video processing. The surround system required deliberate speaker placement, channel balancing, equipment integration and acoustic consideration.
That early project gave Alan first-hand experience with projection geometry, screen placement, viewing distance, room lighting, surround-sound design and the practical challenges of creating a cinema experience inside a residential space.
Alan graduated from Babson College in 1984, where he studied film as a minor. His interest in cinema extends beyond watching movies: he produced, filmed and edited his own movie using Super 8 film and later became proficient in Final Cut Pro.
These experiences gave him an appreciation for cinematography, editing, film formats, projection, sound and the technical process involved in presenting a finished movie to an audience.
Alan grew up watching movies almost every day and describes himself as a dedicated movie buff—and, with a sense of humor, a lifelong couch potato. He has watched more than 1,000 classic films.
His particular interests include film noir, Westerns, dramas, classic Hollywood, movie-theater history, home cinema and the evolution of film, projection and sound technology.
Alan also collects original movie posters, with a special interest in Alfred Hitchcock films. His collection includes original Australian daybill posters for Vertigo and The Birds.
