Home Theater Door Buyer's Guide

The entrance to your theater helps set the tone for the entire room. Learn the difference between a complete custom home theater door and an upholstered theater door panel, and determine which approach is right for your project.

Two Ways to Create a Home Theater Entrance

You do not necessarily need to replace your existing door to create a theater-style entrance. The first decision is whether you want a completely new custom theater door or want to transform an existing door with an upholstered decorative panel.

The simple difference: choose a complete custom theater door when the door itself is part of the project. Choose a theater door panel when you already have a suitable door and primarily want to change its appearance.

Choose Your Theater Door Solution

Both options can create a dramatic theater entrance, but they are designed for different types of projects.

Custom Home Theater Doors

Start from scratch with a complete theater entrance designed around your room. Choose the door style, size, upholstery, wood finish and available decorative hardware.

Best for: new theaters, remodeling projects and customers who want the complete door to be a major architectural feature.
  • Complete custom-built theater door
  • Single and double-door configurations
  • Multiple door widths and heights
  • Choice of upholstered door designs
  • 26 vinyl color choices
  • Available wood finish selections
  • Standard and film-reel hardware options
  • Available decorative hardware finishes
  • Optional push and kick plate details

Home Theater Door Panels

Keep your existing door and add an upholstered decorative panel designed to give the entrance a finished theater look without replacing the complete door.

Best for: existing theater doors, finished rooms and projects where the existing door is suitable but needs a more distinctive theater appearance.
  • Designed for an existing door
  • Changes the appearance without replacing the door
  • Upholstered theater styling
  • Multiple design possibilities
  • Choice of available upholstery colors
  • Useful for theater upgrades and remodels
  • Less involved than replacing the complete door
  • Coordinates with other theater finishes

Which Type Should You Choose?

In most projects, the decision is straightforward once you know whether the existing door is staying or going.

I'm Building a New Theater

Start with the complete custom theater door. You can design the entrance as part of the room instead of adapting the design around an existing door.

I'm Keeping My Existing Door

Start with an upholstered theater door panel. It lets you dramatically change the look of the entrance while retaining the existing door.

I Want Double Theater Doors

A complete custom double-door entrance gives you the greatest control over symmetry, dimensions, upholstery and decorative hardware.

I Just Want My Door to Look Better

If the existing door works properly and the primary goal is appearance, a theater door panel is usually the simpler solution.

Make the Entrance Part of the Theater

A home theater door does more than separate two rooms. The right design can visually connect the entrance with the seating, wall treatments, columns, cabinetry, lighting and other finishes inside the theater.

Classic Cinema

Deep reds, dark wood finishes, gold or brass details and film-reel hardware can create a traditional movie-palace appearance.

Modern Theater

Black upholstery, matte black hardware and cleaner geometric patterns work particularly well in contemporary theaters.

Coordinate the Room

Use upholstery and finish selections to tie the entrance into your theater seating, acoustic treatments and interior finishes.

Create a Focal Point

A dramatic double-door entrance or decorative film-reel hardware can make the doorway one of the defining design elements of the theater.

What About Sound Isolation?

Decorative theater doors and upholstered panels can create the look of a dedicated cinema, but appearance and sound isolation are two different considerations.

For a sound-isolated theater: the door, frame, mass, perimeter seals, threshold or automatic bottom seal, surrounding walls and installation all work together. Decorative upholstery alone should not be treated as a substitute for proper sound-isolation construction.
