Riser Height Calculator for HT Design Seating

Home Theater Planning Tool

Home Theater Riser Calculator

Estimate the platform height needed for a rear row to see over the front row toward the bottom of the screen.

Inches from floor to bottom of visible screen.
Seated front-row obstruction height.
Seated rear-row eye height before adding platform.
Horizontal distance in inches.
Usually front-row eyes to back-row eyes spacing.
Use spacing if D2 is the distance behind front row.
Optional extra inches above the front-row head. Use 0 to match the basic formula; 2-4 inches is more conservative.
Formula:
V1 = H1 - S
R = V1 / D1
Back row screen distance = D1 + D2, unless D2 is already screen-to-back-row distance
V2 = R x back row screen distance
E2 = V2 + S + clearance
Riser height = E2 - E1
Riser recommendation
Recommended riser height: 5"
Result is rounded up to the nearest half inch. Verify room layout before construction.

Calculation notes

  • V1 = H1 - S = 40" - 28" = 12".
  • R = V1 / D1 = 12" / 170" = 0.07059.
  • Back row screen distance = D1 + D2 = 170" + 70" = 240".
  • V2 = R x back row screen distance = 16.94".
  • E2 = V2 + S = 44.94".
  • Riser height = E2 - E1 = 4.94", rounded up to 5".
